December 18
1958 — Niger's Republic Day
On December 18, 1958, Niger's Territorial Assembly proclaimed the Republic of Niger, a semi-autonomous republic within the French Community. Hamani Diori became president of the provisional government, charged with building the nation's first institutions — the foundations on which a new state would have to stand.
Nigeriens still mark this date as the true birth of their republic, and it is celebrated every year as Republic Day. That judgment, kept by the country itself, is the heart of the story: before full independence came this earlier moment, when a republic was proclaimed and its first institutions began to take shape. December 18 is remembered not as a step along the way, but as the beginning.
