2013 — The 2013 Kinshasa Attacks
On December 30, 2013, followers of self-proclaimed prophet Paul Joseph Mukungubila launched coordinated attacks in Kinshasa — storming the state television studios, the international airport, and an army base. The targets spoke for themselves: the broadcaster, the gateway, and the barracks, struck together in one coordinated attack.
Government forces retook the sites the same day, but the death toll remains bitterly disputed, with officials counting about 100 dead and local groups saying far more. Clashes also erupted in Lubumbashi and Kolwezi. Mukungubila fled the country, denying any role. Even the number of the dead remains contested — part of why this day is still argued over.
