1986 — Yoweri Museveni Sworn In

On January 29, 1986, Yoweri Museveni was sworn in as Uganda's president on the steps of Parliament in Kampala. He took the oath just three days after his National Resistance Army captured the capital. The 41-year-old guerrilla commander had fought his way from the bush to the seat of power.

At his swearing-in, he promised "a fundamental change," not a mere change of guard, words that raised a war-weary country's hopes for a different kind of rule. The decades since have tested that promise in full view of the nation he addressed. He still holds the office four decades later, one of Africa's longest-serving leaders.
