2013 — Egypt's 2013 Ouster

On July 3, 2013, Egypt's military ended the country's first democratic presidency. Army chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announced on live television that President Mohamed Morsi, elected just one year earlier, was removed, flanked by opposition leaders, the Grand Imam, and the Coptic Pope as he spoke to the nation.

Millions had filled the streets for days, accusing Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood of betraying the 2011 revolution, while his supporters denounced the move as a coup. The African Union suspended Egypt over the unconstitutional change, and within weeks the crackdown that followed the announcement on live television would turn far bloodier still.
