1821 — The Fall of Sennar
On June 14, 1821, the Funj Sultanate of Sennar, the "Blue Sultanate" that had ruled the Sudanese Nile for three centuries, collapsed before an invading Turco-Egyptian army. Its great city fell almost without a fight, and a kingdom that had endured for generations gave way in a moment that must have stunned those who lived under it.
The fall ended one of Africa's longest-lived kingdoms and opened Sudan to a new age of conquest and trade. Three centuries is a long life for any state. When such a power falls quietly, the silence itself marks the turning: one era closing along the Nile, another beginning over it.
