1959 — Malawi's Martyrs' Day

In the early hours of March 3, 1959, colonial police fanned out across Nyasaland, today's Malawi, arresting Hastings Kamuzu Banda and hundreds of freedom leaders in an operation called Sunrise. When crowds gathered to protest the detentions, troops opened fire, and twenty-one people died that day.

Every March 3, Malawi observes Martyrs' Day, honoring those who gave everything for a free nation. The arrests were meant to silence a freedom movement by taking its leaders in a single sweep. Instead, the bloodshed of that day entered national memory, and the names of the fallen are still carried in the country's calendar of remembrance.
