1976 — The UN Takes On Apartheid
On November 9, 1976, the United Nations turned its full weight against apartheid. In the General Assembly hall, the world body adopted a sweeping Programme of Action, sponsored by African states including Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Algeria and Zambia. The programme demanded mandatory sanctions, a global arms embargo and a total break with apartheid South Africa. It was not a plea or a warning; it was a coordinated demand, carried by newly confident African voices.
The message to Pretoria was unmistakable: the era of business as usual was over. South Africa could no longer expect the world to trade, arm and talk with it as if apartheid were merely its private affair.
