2014 — Burkina Faso's Uprising
On October 31, 2014, Blaise Compaoré resigned as president of Burkina Faso and went into exile in neighbouring Côte d'Ivoire, after days of protest against his 27-year rule. Compaoré, who had seized power in 1987, had announced a plan to amend the constitution to abolish presidential term limits, which would have allowed him to serve additional terms. Burkinabés took to the streets en masse against the proposed change.
On October 30 the protests turned more violent, and demonstrators set fire to public buildings, including the building housing the National Assembly. Compaoré declared a state of emergency and dissolved the government, but the protests did not end, and the next day he resigned.
