1962 — Uganda Gains Independence
▶ Watch the 60-second film On October 9, 1962, the Union Jack came down over Kampala and a new nation was born, as Uganda won independence from Britain. Dr. Apollo Milton Obote, leader of the Uganda People's Congress, became the nation's first prime minister. After decades of British rule, Ugandans gathered to celebrate freedom, unity, and the promise of a future they would shape themselves.
That handover marked the beginning of Uganda's story as a sovereign state. It was a beginning written by Ugandans themselves, in a country no longer ruled by Britain. The celebration held more than relief: it held a promise that Ugandans themselves would decide what came next, and that the future was theirs to make.
