2021 — Africa and the Caribbean Reunite

On September 7, 2021, African and Caribbean leaders met for the first-ever Africa–CARICOM Summit, held virtually and hosted by Kenya. Chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta, the summit brought together heads of state from the African Union and the Caribbean Community to deepen trade, diplomatic, and cultural ties.

They discussed reparations, COVID-19 vaccine equity, climate action, and reform of global financial institutions, and agreed to institutionalize the partnership. September 7 has since been observed as Africa–CARICOM Day — a landmark moment in reconnecting Africa with its diaspora across the Atlantic, separated by centuries but bound by shared history. The doors opened by that first meeting are still being walked through today.
